President Bronislaw Komorowski has indicated he is still considering ordering a two day ballot in Poland’s general election this autumn in an attempt to boost turnout.

In an interview for the public broadcaster TVP, Komorowski said he will not rush into the decision but made it clear that his role is to make sure voter turnout is high.

“The president should not be interested in the share of votes political parties receive but in how many people go to vote, because a high election turnout is a chance for a bigger participation in the democratic processes of this country,” he said.

Turnout in the 2007 general election was 53 percent.

The president has until August 6 to make a decision on the date of this year’s parliamentary elections and whether to hold the ballot over a period of two days.

Elections will most probably take place in mid-October. The ruling Civic Platform are currently in the lead in all polls over the opposition Law and Justice party. (pg/di)
