Novel way to help stroke patients: Polish health minister

Beginning mid-year, all stroke patients in Poland will have access to a revolutionary new treatment method known as mechanical thrombectomy, the country’s health minister has said.

Łukasz Szumowski said the government would set aside PLN 100 million (EUR 23.3 million, USD 26 million) annually to finance this type of treatment for patients nationwide as part of a pilot programme.
To begin with, seven medical centres in various parts of the country were covered by the programme when it was launched several months ago, Szumowski said on Tuesday.
He added that in the next stage, a further 10 centres would join the programme, enabling patients nationwide to have access to this innovative form of treatment as of July 1.
Mechanical thrombectomy is a potentially life-saving procedure that involves the mechanical removal of a blood clot from a vessel.
The treatment should be administered within eight hours of the onset of a stroke, public broadcaster Polish Radio’s IAR news agency reported.
