Asthma cases have shot up by 67 percent among adolescents and adults in the last ten years, and by 28 percent among children aged up to 14, public broadcaster Polish Radio’s IAR news agency reported on Tuesday, World Asthma Day.
Prof. Marek Kulus, head of the Polish Society of Allergology, said asthma can develop for genetic reasons.
He added that another factor could be the environment in which a person lives – for example air pollution can contribute to the condition by irritating the respiratory tract.
World Asthma Day is an annual event held by the Global Initiative for Asthma to improve awareness of the condition.
