Several hundred farmers staged a protest in central Warsaw on Wednesday, blocking traffic during morning rush hour.

They demanded guarantees that half the products in Polish supermarkets be domestically produced, and that products be marked with a flag denoting their country of origin, public broadcaster Polish Radio’s IAR news agency reported.

The farmers were expected to stage a rally at the capital’s Zawiszy Square until 1pm and then move to the nearby Dmowski Roundabout, where they planned to demonstrate until 4pm.

Last month farmers set tyres alight at Zawiszy Square, a move condemned as “hooliganism” by Interior Minister Joachim Brudziński.

In February, farmers from across Poland protested outside the presidential palace in Warsaw, demanding restrictions on food imports.

Agriculture Minister Jan Krzysztof Ardanowski said at the time that the protest was “a political project” and accused the farmers of “complete ignorance” of the role of national and EU authorities in agricultural policy.
