Poland to help low-income families tackle smog, high heating costs

Poland's cabinet has adopted a new plan to support low-income families struggling to heat their homes and water renovate and insulate their homes in a bid to tackle smog.

Under the new plan, as well as upgrading heating installations so that homes do not emit excessive amounts of carbon, the government will subsidise home insulation to reduce the overall amount of energy needed for heating.
Seventy percent of the cost is to be covered by a state fund, while local government councils are expected to foot the rest of the bill.
Some PLN 883 million (EUR 200 million) is to be earmarked for the five-year-long plan, which starts next year, with PLN 700 million of that funding coming from a recycling levy.
The government estimates that insulating a single home could cost PLN 53,000. (vb)
