Poles took to lakes, rivers and the Baltic Sea in droves amid scorching temperatures which exceeded 35 degrees in the shade in some parts of the country this year.
Robert Opas from Polish police headquarters said that most accidents occurred in areas not patrolled by life guards, mainly in rivers and lakes.
Twenty people drowned in the sea, public broadcaster Polish Radio’s IAR news agency reported.
In one case that made the headlines, three Polish siblings died after being swept up by a wave at a beach in northwestern Poland last month.
The children, aged 11, 13 and 14, disappeared when their mother attended to her two-year-old, who was on the beach.
This summer has been the warmest in Poland since the end of the 18th century, according to private broadcaster TVN.
