A mass migration of white storks from Poland to Africa has started two weeks early, a Polish ornithologist has said.

Bird expert Ireneusz Kaługa said the phenomenon is unusual and hard to explain.
He suggested it may be the result of an early growing season which came after exceptionally warm weather this year.
The white stork typically starts to leave Poland for the winter in mid-August but the first of the great birds started to depart before the end of July.
Kaługa also said that about 60 percent of young white storks do not survive their first winter.
About a quarter of the world's white stork population was born in Poland.
The birds typically return with their mate to the same nest. (vb/pk)
