Planned Polish hub airport gets presidential nod

Poland’s president has given his seal of approval to an ambitious plan to build a large new airport in the centre of the country.

President Andrzej Duda has signed into law legislation laying out the rules for organising and carrying out the project, his office said on Saturday.
The new airport, to be built between the capital Warsaw and the central city of Łódź, is expected to handle up to 100 million passengers a year and be one of the largest hub airports in Europe after it is completed in 2027.
The construction project is due to start in 2021 and cost anywhere from PLN 20 billion (EUR 4.65 bn, USD 5.42 bn) to PLN 30 billion (EUR 7 bn, USD 8.15 bn), according to an estimate given by an infrastructure ministry official last year.
Rafał Milczarski, CEO of Poland’s state-owned airline LOT, has said that the new central airport is needed for the carrier to expand and launch new connections as Warsaw's Chopin Airport is nearing capacity.
The bill signed into law by Duda specifies the rules for acquiring land and financing the construction of the new airport and accompanying infrastructure, according a report by the onet.pl website.
