Dozens of rescuers pressed ahead with efforts to reach four other miners who remained stuck some 900 metres underground at the Zofiówka coal mine in the southern town of Jastrzębie-Zdrój.

The man confirmed dead was brought back to the surface unconscious by rescuers on Sunday morning and was subsequently pronounced deceased by a doctor, Daniel Ozon, CEO of the Jastrzębie Coal Company, which operates the mine, told reporters.

The miner showed no signs of life when rescuers located him late on Saturday, according to reports.

About 250 miners were underground when the tremor hit the mine at around 11 am on Saturday.

Two missing miners have since been found alive. They were taken to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Rescuers were being hampered by high temperatures and high levels of methane in the mine.
