The operation saw investigators confiscate 48.5 tonnes of illegal tobbaco and nearly 2.8 million cigarettes, according to Polish Radio’s IAR news agency.
Law enforcers have busted a factory producing illegal cigarettes and detained five suspects, IAR reported on Friday.
Prosecutors have charged the suspects with being part of an organised criminal group and also accused them of illegal manufacture of cigarettes and tax offences.
The crackdown – by officers from Poland's Central Bureau of Police Investigation (CBŚP), working together with investigators from the country’s customs and tax administration – saved public coffers some PLN 30 million (EUR 7.1 million, USD 8.6 million) in losses from uncollected excise tax, IAR said.
