The engine and seven coaches of a PKP train carrying about 200 people were derailed.

A special commission is probing the incident.

One of the trains ran a stop sign but a PKP spokesman said it was unclear how that happened.

"We do not know why a freight train drove onto the main track from a side track, despite a stop signal at the Smętowo station. It caused a crash with a train ... that was already on the main track," PKP PLK spokesman Mirosław Siemieniec said, adding that no one on board the trains was seriously injured.

Twenty-eight people, including 15 children, were injured, and 17 were taken to local hospitals.
