The European Commission has launched procedures against Poland for breaking the EU’s equal rights laws, according to the PAP news agency, which cited an anonymous source in the European Commission.

PAP said that Europe's gender equality and labour commissioners sent a letter to Poland's labour and social policy minister to start a dialogue with Poland about its varied retirement ages for men and women, which the European Commission has called gender discrimination.
Poland’s Ministry of Family, Labour and Social Policy said the introduction of different retirement ages for men and women is "lawful and in line with social expectations as well as with Polish tradition.”
In 2016, the Polish government overturned a 2012 decision to raise the statutory retirement age to 67, up from 65 for men and 60 for women.
The European Commission’s spokeswoman Mina Andreeva last week said that the European Union has rules which aim to implement gender equality, which extends to social security and the retirement age. (vb/pk)
