Tougher sentences in Poland for child abuse

Under the new rules, anyone who sees violence but does not inform the authorities faces up to three years in jail if such abuse causes severe injury or the death of a child.

Those who physically or psychologically abuse children face six months to eight years in jail. Abuse with particular cruelty will be punishable by one to 10 years in prison.

The new rules were initiated by Poland’s Ombudsman for Children and backed by President Andrzej Duda.

Duda signed tougher penalties into law in April.

He said at the time that the rules aim to protect the most vulnerable and those who find it hardest to get help when they need it.
