Polish PM: Constitution should guarantee support for families, retirement age

Her comments came in an interview for Saturday's edition of the “Super Express” daily. They followed a recent proposal by Polish President Andrzej Duda, who in early May said that Poland should rethink its constitution, which has been in force for 20 years.

Szydło also said that in order to change the constitution, the ruling Law and Justice (PiS) party first needs to win constitutional majority in Polish parliament (a two-thirds majority in the lower house) and that is their aim for 2019, when the next parliamentary elections are scheduled.

Asked what changes the constitution needs, Szydło said that she would like to concentrate on flagship PiS projects: “Personally, I would like the constitution to include guarantees of support for families and also guarantees over the retirement age – projects we have put into effect and which the Civic Platform will get rid of when they come to power.”

After winning parliamentary elections in late 2015, PiS introduced a 500+ financial support program for families with children and scrapped the raised retirement age introduced by the previous Civic Platform (PO) government. (mol/pk)
