Collector’s coin commemorates tragic events at Polish mine

The National Bank of Poland has issued a collector’s coin commemorating the 35th anniversary of the killings of nine miners by the country’s communist-era authorities.

On 16 December 1981, three days after the imposition of martial law, nine were killed and 23 wounded by the Zomo riot police at the Wujek coal mine in Katowice, southern Poland. Miners’ protests became a symbol of defiance against the military regime.
The silver coin has the face value of PLN 10 and can be purchased on the National Bank of Poland website, priced PLN 110.
The reverse of the coin depicts a cross, nine miners’ lamps and a breach in the wall through which the armed riot police entered the Wujek mine. The obverse has an image of a mineshaft on it.
