“The Church cannot be left alone in this effort. Action is needed on the side of the government”, said Fr Paweł Rytel-Andrianik, the spokesman for the Episcopate.

Support for asylum seekers has been one of the issues addressed during the ongoing meeting in the Polish capital.

“It is related to such matters as safety or social security. The Church does not have the possibility to provide refugees with jobs and education,” the spokesman added.

The clergy confirmed, however, that the Catholic Church is committed to the issue and will continue to help refugees via Caritas, a charity organisation active in about 5,000 Polish parishes.

According to the Polish bishops, cooperation of the Church, state and local governments is crucial to effectively aid refugees.

The Polish Episcopal Conference is also to discuss World Youth Days, which will be held 25-31 July 2016 in Kraków, southern Poland. (ał/rg)
