The head of the Government Protection Bureau (BOR) will not have to step down over a recent incident where a tyre on the presidential limousine burst, causing an accident.

“At this point there is no reason for [BOR chief] Colonel Andrzej Pawlikowski to resign,” said deputy Interior Minister Jarosław Zieliński, referring to media reports of negligence in relation to the safety preparations of a fleet of cars used by President Andrzej Duda.

On Friday, the Rzeczpospolita daily said that the run-flat tyre mounted on the presidential BMW had been earlier withdrawn from use.

Earlier reports said that the tyre was produced in 2010, meaning that it was six years old.

The accident occurred on Friday 4 March on Poland's A4 motorway. After one of the rear tyres burst on the president's limousine, the driver managed to steer the car onto the hard shoulder, without crashing into other vehicles. No one was injured.
