Minister of Justice Zbigniew Ziobro is preparing a draft law that would allow for the creation of a sex offender register, part of which would be accessible on the internet to members of the public.

The register would take in those convicted of crimes including sexual abuse, incest, paedophilia and rape, as well as the possession or distribution pornographic material involving minors.

Data available to the public online will pertain to paedophiles, as well as repeated sex offenders. Besides names and addresses of offenders, photographs would also be published.

A broader database of sex offenders would be accessible to judges, prosecutors and police officers, among others. It would include those convicted of crimes abroad, as well as young offenders and those whose cases were discontinued.

Ziobro apparently outlined at a meeting at the prime minister's office on 9 December that the project is intended to prevent recently released offenders from having “easy access to children.” (nh/pk)
