The Gdańsk attacks follow on from a string of incidents in recent weeks, apparently sparked by anti-Islamic sentiments.

A Sikh was reportedly spat on and punched by a nightclub bouncer in the southern city of Kraków last week, after being accused of being a ''Muslim terrorist." November also saw the severe beating of a Syrian Christian in Poznań in the mid-west of Poland, who was apparently branded a ''fxxxxxg Muslim.” The victim was hospitalised. A Hindu from India was also physically attacked in the town of Września near Poznań. The assailant called him ''Syrian.” A young Egyptian man who has a Polish girlfriend was also beaten up in the south-western city of Wrocław last month.

On 11 November over 50,000 people took part in an Independence Day march in Warsaw led by Polish nationalists. The slogan of the march was 'Poland for the Poles, Poles for Poland'. The march, an annual event, came amid the ongoing debate about offering asylum to refugees and migrants. (nh/rk)
