The Polish People's Party (PSL), a minor opposition party in the Sejm lower house of Polish parliament, has said that it will appeal to the European Parliament over changes to the law on the Constitutional Tribunal.

"We cannot pretend that nothing happened,” the head of the party's parliamentary club, Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, told the TVP broadcaster.

“We want to inform our partners in the European Union about the situation in Poland today,” Kosiniak- Kamysz said, referring to the recent changes to the law connected with the Tribunal which were passed by both the Sejm and the Senate, and then signed by Polish President Andrzej Duda.

The Act, which comes into force on 5 December, will see five judges being elected to the Tribunal, one of the highest courts in the country.

According Kosiniak-Kamysz, the move is an attempt to “defend Polish democracy”.

“We will raise this issue on the European forum,” he added.

PSL abstained from the recent vote in the Sejm, with the bill being passed by the governing Law and Justice (PiS) MPs and those of the opposition Kukiz'15 grouping.

The change to the law regarding the Tribunal has been called “an attack to Polish democracy” by the opposition. (rg/di)
