Miners protest in Warsaw

Hundreds of miners took to the streets of the Polish capital, Warsaw, to protest “unfulfilled promises” by the government.

Around 500 trade unionists, mainly from the mining industry, protested in front of the Prime Minister’s office in Warsaw.
They carried placards reading “We demand the fulfilment of promises”, and “Do not cry, Ewa” referring to Ewa Kopacz, the country’s Prime Minister.
Miners are voicing their frustration that the government has not made good on its assurances to help the mining industry.

Among the demonstrators were representatives of the Solidarity Trade Union of Mine Rescue workers in Poland, and the Trade Union of Miners in Poland, among others.
The government announced a restructuring plan for the mining industry earlier this year. In August, it said that it will transfer ailing miner Kompania Węglowa (KW) to a state-controlled fund in an attempt to help the industry.
Poland is one of Europe's most coal-dependent countries, and much of its energy production is still coal-based. (rg/rk)
