Varsovians were warned to drive with special care after sightings of the elk on the right bank of the River Vistula.
Members of the public reported seeing the four-legged wanderer near the National Stadium and in the Skaryszewski Park, among other locations.
The elk then dipped into the river.
“It's an excellent swimmer,” commented Andrzej Kruszewicz, director of Warsaw Zoo.
“It's managing to swim in very deep water.
“It crosses the water and the river is no barrier for him,” he said, suggesting that the elk was probably looking to eat some of the thickets on the riverbank.
Firemen and vets assembled by the river in a bid to entrap the animal. The European elk occasionally stray into Warsaw suburbs from the Kampinos national park north-east of the Polish capital. The park is also home to a growing lynx population. (nh/rk)
