The train was travelling from the popular seaside destination of Kołobrzeg to Katowice, Silesia.

The crossing, although fitted with warning signs, had no automatic system with boom barriers.

Three passengers were killed instantaneously, including a 4-year-old girl, a 15-year-old boy and a 24-year-old woman.

The driver and a fourth passenger were taken to hospital with severe injuries.

Police and representatives of the local prosecutor's office have spoken with witnesses and examined the site of the accident.

About 400 people die per year in the European Union as a result of level crossing accidents. (nh)
