Large families are the most threatened by extreme poverty, according to the Central Statistical Office (GUS).

GUS calculated extreme poverty to be a disposable income of below PLN 540 per month for individuals, and PLN 1,458 a month for four-people families: two adults and two children.

In 2014, about 11 percent of married Poles with three children, and about 27 percent of Poles with four or more children were in extreme poverty as defined above.

About 10 percent of children and teenagers under 18 were in extreme poverty, GUS noted.

The figures for individuals and four-person families (at PLN 713 and PLN 1,926 a month respectively) remained unchanged in relative-poverty terms at 16.2 percent. (jh)
