In 2005, there was a lawyer or legal counsellor for every 1,253 people, according to the Council of Bars and Law Societies of Europe (CCBE).
"The data indicates that over the last decade the availability of legal aid in our country has significantly increased," said Barbara Kars, the secretary of the National Council of Legal Advisers.
The CCBE list includes 28 European countries. The increase in Polish lawyers puts the country squarely in the middle of the ranking – in 13th place.
At the bottom of the list was Finland with one lawyer for every 2,718 residents. The highest was in Spain with a ratio of one to 189 people. (rg)
