Senate honours 'father of Polish independence' Piłsudski

The Polish Senate, the upper house of Parliament, has paid tribute to Marshal Józef Piłsudski on the 80th anniversary of his death which falls on 12 May.

The Senate resolution describes Piłsudski as the main architect of the rebirth of independent Poland and its armed forces, an outstanding politician and military commander.
It was thanks to Piłsudski that Poland defeated Soviet Russia in 1920, thus saving the country from communism.
Senate Speaker Bogdan Borusewicz said during the debate that Piłsudski was a man of flesh and blood, who epitomized the ideas of independence and sovereignty.
“In People’s Poland,” he said, “the communist authorities did their best to destroy the memory of the Marshal.”
It has been carried on, however, he added, in the Polish families.
In their resolution, the senators recalled what President of Poland, Ignacy Mościcki said during Piłsudski's funeral:
“He gave Poland freedom, boundaries, power and respect.”
Senator Czeslaw Ryszka said that in five years time, for the centenary of the victorious Battle of Warsaw in the Polish-Soviet War, a Triumphal Arch should be built in Warsaw. (mk/nh)
