The Polish government is aiming to push through an amendment to the law concerning the national border guard, allowing for surveillance cameras to be installed in border zones.

According to the Ministry of the Interior, the cameras are designed to help the Polish Border Guard combat smugglers, as well as illegal immigrants.

Besides observing vehicles, the cameras would be able to record numberplates, which could then be filed in a database.

Although the project is chiefly aimed at Poland's eastern borders, concerning countries outside the Schengen Area, the amendment would also allow for cameras in border zones near the coast.

Municipalities within 15 km of Poland's coastline would be covered by the amendment. (nh)
