Former President Aleksander Kwaśniewski has seemingly distanced himself from the Democratic Left Alliance’s candidate Magdalena Ogórek by saying that he had “limited contact” with interns when he was president.

The comment came after Kwaśniewski told broadcaster TVN24 that he did not know of any photos or films in which both the former president and Ogórek were present.
“I don’t remember any such [thing],” Kwaśniewski said. In an immediate response, Ogórek took to Twitter to “remind” people of their joint appearance before the cameras.
The video shows Kwaśniewski extolling the virtues of Ogórek in the run-up to the 2011 parliamentary elections, where ultimately the current hopeful from the Democratic Left Alliance failed to win a seat.
“Polish democracy needs young and talented people who already have some experience […] Magda Ogórek is one of those people,” Kwaśniewski said back in 2011.
However, Kwaśniewski said on Tuesday evening that “Magdalena Ogórek is an interesting candidate from the younger generation, but she needs time to develop”.
Kwaśniewski also said that Ogórek’s campaign might pick up when she breaks her silence.
“I don’t think she can possibly go through the whole campaign without saying anything, and I expect [the media] and the public to engage in dialogue with the candidate,” Poland’s former president said.
Earlier on in her career, Magdalena Ogórek undertook an internship in the Presidential Chancellery, working in the Department for European Integration. (jb)
