Warsaw University tops Polish ranking

The University of Warsaw has toppled Krakow's Jagiellonian University in the 15th edition of a ranking of public and private institutions of higher learning in Poland.

Deputy Minister of Science and Higher Education Daria Lipinska-Nalecz presented Rector of Warsaw University Professor Marcin Palys with the 2014 award, which was adjudicated by the Perspectives Educational Foundation.
“We have ambitions to be counted among the best in the world,” Professor Palys commented.
The battle for first place in the ranking is typically a two-horse race between the Warsaw and Krakow universities, although victory for the latter would have been especially sweet this year, with the Jagiellonian University fresh from celebrating its 650th anniversary earlier this month.
Third place was taken by the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznan, fourth by the Warsaw University of Technology and fifth by the Wroclaw University of Technology.
The biggest climber this year was the Poznan University of Technology, which jumped from 22nd to 16th in the overall ranking.
All in all, 193 seats of higher learning were surveyed in the 15th edition of the ranking. (nh)
