Warsaw mayor opens Nobel Peace Summit

“Peace is a priceless gift,” mayor of Warsaw Hanna Gronkiewicz-waltz said at the opening in the Polish capital of the XIII Nobel Peace Summit, attended by former winners of the Nobel Peace Prize.

“There must be no tolerance for human rights violations , extreme social inequality, threats to the environment and the trampling of democracy,” Gronkiewicz-Waltz said at the annual three-day summit, Monday morning, held in Warsaw this year to mark the 30th anniversary of Lech Welesa being awarded the Nobel Peace Prize when he was head of the anti-communist Solidarity trade union.
The summit is being attended by Lech Walesa and fellow peace prize winners Dalai Lama, former prime minister of South Africa Frederik Willem de Klerk , economist Mohammad Yunus , Northern Irish peace activist Mairead Maguire among others.
Actress Sharon Stone is also attending and will pick up a special award for her work fighting HIV/AIDS. (pg)
