Justice minister Jaroslaw Gowin, one of the government’s more conservative politicians, has said he “see no problem” in transsexual MP Anna Grodzka becoming deputy speaker of parliament.
“I see no problem in voting for the nomination of Anna Grodzka AS Sejm [lower house of parliament] deputy speaker,” Minister Gown said in his constituency of Krakow on Monday.
The 58 year-old Anna Grodzka, the world’s only transsexual MP, has been nominated by her party, the liberal Palikot Movement, to be one of five deputy speakers
“That she is a transsexual is not a problem for me. That is a private matter. Though I do wonder if she has the necessary experience for the role of deputy speaker,” Gowin - who has voted against civic partnership, liberalizing abortion and IVF bills in the past, sometimes against official policy of his party, the ruling centre-right Civic Platform – said on Monday.
Gowin’s reservations echo comments by Prime Minister Donald Tusk last Friday, who also questioned Anna Grodzka’s lack of experience sitting on parliamentary committees since she was elected as an MP in the 2011 general election.
“On the other hand, “ Gowin added,” I think that it is the right of every party to nominate a candidate, which it considers to be most appropriate.” (pg)
