Snow covers central and south Poland, as winter takes its grip

Snow has been falling across the eastern parts of the country from early morning, carpeting the Podlasie, Mazovian, Podkarpacie and Lubelskie provinces in the centre and south of the country.

Snowfall has also been reported in the Jelenia Góra Valley, south west Poland.

Snow dusts cities of Krakow, Rzeszów and Sandomierz in the southeast and Białymstok further to the north.

Police report that driving conditions have worsened due to wet and slushy roads, as temperatures drop below zero in most of the country.

Fifty two people died in over 300 accidents on the roads over the weekend, police report.

“This is probably the most tragic weekend this year,” police spokesman Chief Insp. Mariusz Sokolowski said.

Police also arrested around 1200 drunk drivers.

Snowfall is to continue in the western parts of Poland tomorrow, gradually moving to the center of the country. Spells of precipitation are also expected in Warsaw tomorrow. (aba/pg)
