Poland should speak up about the conflict in eastern Ukraine, Małgorzata Gosiewska, a member of parliament from Poland’s governing Law and Justice (PiS) party, has said.
Law and Justice MP Małgorzata Gosiewska.
“We should be decisive in speaking about and showing what is happening in the East, be an ambassador for Ukraine – this is also in our best interest”, Gosiewska said.
Gosiewska also said that Poland should oppose any motions to revoke sanctions against Russia, adding that Russian President Vladimir Putin responds "only to strength".
Sanctions, including limiting Russian access to European capital markets, were imposed over Russia’s 2014 annexation of Crimea and fighting in eastern Ukraine.
Earlier this week, Gosiewska headed a Polish delegation to war-torn Avdiivka in the eastern Donbass region of Ukraine.
She said: "I am impressed that the entire Ukrainian nation also united to help the local population, which has suffered from shelling.
“We must remember that the war in the east of Ukraine is taking place quite close to [Poland].
"Ukraine is our closest neighbor. It’s a country whose people came out on to Maidan under the EU flag, to be together with the European community. Ukraine today remains a bulwark of the democratic values of Europe," she added.
Gosiewska is a co-author of a report entitled "Russian Crimes in the East of Ukraine”, which was last year submitted to the International Criminal Court in the Hague. (vb/pk)
