On the eve of Nazi Germany’s annexation of Austria in 1938, a then 19-year-old Jew, George Weidenfeld, escaped Vienna for the United Kingdom.
The former refugee, now a British Lord, was helped by Christian denominations such as the Quakers and the Plymouth Brethren. Now he says, it is time to repay this debt. As Michał Owczarek reports, a Polish organisation draws a comparison between this and Jan Karski’s efforts during World War II.
"We see in this action as having some similarity to Jan Karski’s efforts, maybe not a direct one, but basically Karski, a Catholic, was rescuing Jews, and Weidenfeld, a Jew, was rescuing Catholics," said Waldemar Piasecki of the Jan Karski Society.
