As Elżbieta Krajewska reports, the film has won a string of awards, including a BAFTA, Goya award, a European Parliament LUX prize and an Independent Spirit Award on the eve of the Oscars.

“Oh, God. How did I get here?,” asked director Paweł Pawlikowski after arriving onstage to pick up the award.

Actress Agata Kulesza, who plays a gut-wrenching performance as the disillusioned, coldhearted official in the flim, said that together with Agata Trzebuchowska, who plays Ida, they were actually not there when the verdict was announced.

“We were screaming and running, and people were staring at us and you could see they were happy for us because it was such immense joy,” she told Polish Radio.
