The decreasing population of the porpoise, a protected species, has had environmentalists and fishermen at odds in many countries of the Baltic region, not excluding Poland.

As Slawek Szefs reports, the uneasy task is to secure the interests and rights of both sides - the hard working people and the almost extinct animals which fall prey of maritime business.
“Polish fishermen already have to deal with numerous strict regulations and adding further restrictions to the list will not spark any enthusiasm,” says Pawel Mikusek form the Environment Ministry.
“Our problem is to obtain a credible, scientific-based method how they can tackle the issue effectively, so that the requirements we impose yield visible results and not be limited to mounting senseless obligations,” the ministry spokesman told Polish Radio.
