The 22-year-old Pole, ranked 48th in the world, played some of his best tennis and took a set from the Serbian ace before eventually succumbing 5-7, 7-6 (5), 1-6, 4-6 in their men’s singles match at the Grand Slam grass-court tournament in the British capital on Friday.
In a post-match comment, Djokovic complimented Hurkacz on his performance, while retired tennis pro John McEnroe was quoted as saying that the young Pole “has top 10 potential.”
After being sent packing from the All England Lawn Club, Hurkacz was expected to make his way to North America to take part in hard-court tournaments leading up to the US Open.
Hurkacz on Wednesday beat Argentina’s Leonardo Mayer, 6-7, 6-1, 7-6, 6-3, in the second round of Wimbledon.
The Pole on Monday defeated Serbia’s Dušan Lajović, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, in the first round.
Meanwhile, Poland’s Magda Linette was on Saturday due to take on two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic in the third round of the women's singles at the Grand Slam tournament in London.
