Poland’s Robert Kubica is returning to Formula 1 Grand Prix racing next season, according to reports.
Britain's Williams team will confirm later on Thursday that the Pole will drive for them, according to the Gazeta Wyborcza daily.
“This is one of the most unusual comebacks in the history of sport,” the paper commented, adding that Kubica has undergone 18 operations to his right hand after a serious crash.
The Rzeczpospolita daily reported that in recent days, details have been agreed for a complex deal between the driver, Williams and Kubica’s main partner, PKN Orlen.
State-run Orlen is Poland’s biggest oil refiner.
Rzeczpospolita reported the Polish company will become one of Williams’ sponsors.
Kubica, the first Pole to compete in Formula 1, was forced to take a break from the sport after a serious crash in a rally car in 2011.
He injured his arm, shoulder and leg. He then started a long road to recovery.
Kubica competed for Renault in 2010, scoring three podium spots in his season with the French manufacturer.
He returned to Formula 1 this season as a test and reserve driver for the Williams team.
