Football: Poland beat Japan 1-0 in World Cup farewell

Poland’s national football team defeated Japan 1-0 in its final game at the World Cup in Russia on Thursday.

The only goal of the match in the southwestern Russian city of Volgograd came from Poland defender Jan Bednarek after a free kick in the 59th minute.

Despite the win, Poland failed to progress to the next round of the tournament, finishing bottom of their World Cup group, behind Colombia, Japan and Senegal.
Colombia finished top of Group H containing Poland, while Japan ended as the runners-up. Both of these teams advanced to the knockout phase of the competition.
Poland, with two defeats and one win, and Senegal, with one win, one defeat and a draw, were sent packing from Russia.
Poland lost their chance to move on to the knockout rounds after losing 0-3 to Colombia in their previous match at the World Cup on Sunday.
Poland lost 1-2 to Senegal in their first game at the tournament last Tuesday.
Poland’s previous World Cup appearance was in Germany in 2006, when they did not get past the group stage.
Poland finished third in the 1974 World Cup in West Germany and were also third in Spain in 1982.
