Southern Poland will be a global anti-doping centre in 2019, Polish Sports Minister Witold Bańka said on Wednesday when he signed a deal for Katowice to hold next year’s World Anti-Doping Conference.

The conference will be held from November 5-7, 2019, just months ahead of the Tokyo Olympics.
Bańka said the “most important decisions” about doping in sports would be taken at the conference.
Some 2,000 people from around the world will flock to Katowice for the conference, where the World Ant-Doping Agency’s new leaders will be selected and changes to anti-doping codes will be made.
“Doping is the silent killer of the Olympic idea,” Bańka said.
“There is no other way than to intensify the fight” against doping, he added. He said he was trying to convince the World Anti-Doping Agency and sports ministers of countries around the world to step up financial commitments to investigating cheats in sport.
The World Anti-Doping Agency decided to hold its 2019 conference in Katowice last May. (vb)
