Polish speed skaters too slow to make impact at Pyeongchang

Wednesday was a fifth straight day without medals for Poland at the Pyeongchang winter Olympics after the nation's speed skaters emerged empty-handed from the women’s 1,000 metres event in South Korea.

Poland’s Natalia Czerwonka finished 12th in the women’s 1,000 metres, with a time of 1:15.77, while her countrywoman Karolina Bosiek was 29th with 1:18.53.
Dutch skater Jorien ter Mors set an Olympic record of 1:13.56 to win a gold medal, while world record holder Nao Kodaira of Japan finished second in 1:13.82, ahead of compatriot Miho Takagi, who took the bronze with 1:13.98.
On Monday, Czerwonka finished ninth in the women’s 1,500 metres.
A day later, Poland’s top speed skater Zbigniew Bródka failed to defend his Olympic gold in the men’s 1,500 metres, finishing 12th.
Two other Polish speed skaters competing in the men’s 1,500 metres on Monday, Jan Szymański and Konrad Niedźwiedzki, finished 16th and 20th respectively, adding to feelings of disappointment among fans at home.
Poland's Adrian Wielgat on Sunday came last in 22nd spot in the men's 5,000 metres, 21.95 seconds behind the winner.
Poland's Luiza Złotkowska finished 14th in the women's 3,000 metres on the first day of the Olympics in South Korea.
