Polish Heritage Night, an annual event in the US organised by Poland’s Marcin Gortat, an NBA basketball player, has taken place for the seventh time.
"For me as a Pole, this is a great opportunity to bring our culture closer to Americans, to show what kind of country we are," said Gortat, a Washington Wizards player.
During the event in Washington, some 20,000 fans applauded Polish soldiers who had fought in Afghanistan.
A video message was screened during the night by Polish President Andrzej Duda, who reminded listeners that Poland is marking the centenary of regaining its independence.
Duda also underlined the importance of the military alliance between Poland and the United States.
The event featured a match which saw Gortat’s Washington Wizards beating the Brooklyn Nets 119-113.
