The facility, in the central town of Tomaszów Mazowiecki, some 110 kilometres southwest of the capital Warsaw, is the country’s first and only indoor speed skating rink.
The arena cost over PLN 47.6 million (EUR 11.2 million, USD 13 million) to build, with the Ministry of Sport and Tourism pitching in over PLN 19 million in funds.
Zbigniew Bródka, a top Polish speed skater and a 2014 Olympic champion, has hailed the facility as “a milestone in the development of Polish speed skating.”
Luiza Złotkowska, a silver medalist from Sochi, said the rink would improve the comfort of training for Poland’s speed skaters in the run-up to February’s winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea.
Until now Polish speed skaters were forced to train in facilities abroad, Złotkowska added.
