Four European championship medals for Polish track cyclists

Poland’s track cyclists claimed a total of four medals, one gold, one silver and two bronze, at this year’s European Track Championships in Berlin, Germany.

On Sunday, the last day of the event, Poland’s Wojciech Pszczolarski and Daniel Staniszewski took the bronze in the men’s 50-kilometre madison event (200 laps with sprints every 10 laps), after finishing behind their French and Danish competitors.

On Saturday, Poland's Alan Banaszek grabbed the gold in the men's 40 km points race of 160 laps, finishing ahead of Denmark’s Niklas Larse and Germany’s Maximilian Beyer.

On Friday, Justyna Kaczkowska took the silver in the women’s individual pursuit, with a time of 3:32.452 and an average speed of 50.835 kph. She was second only to Britain’s Katie Archibald and beat third-placed Silvia Valsecchi of Italy.

On Thursday, Poland’s Justyna Kaczkowska, Katarzyna Pawłowska, Daria Pikulik and Nikol Płosaj won bronze in the women’s team pursuit event, with a time of 4:24.705. Italy won gold and silver went to Britain.

Poland finished eighth in the overall medal standings. Germany came top of the table with a total of 12 medals, ahead of France with eight and Britain with four including three golds.

The 2017 European Track Championships were held in Berlin from October 19 to 22. (gs/pk)
