Poland's Wojciech Nowicki won bronze with a 78.03 result, behind Valeriy Pronkin, a Russian athlete who threw 13 centimetres further for the silver medal.
Fajdek told reporters ahead of the event that he was aiming for a hat-trick, having won gold at the last two world championships events – in Moscow in 2013 and Beijing in 2015.
Fajdek and Nowicki took Poland's medal tally to six. Anita Włodarczyk won gold, defending her hammer throw world championship title, and Malwina Kopron won bronze in the same event, while silver medals went to Adam Kszczot for the 800-metre event and Piotr Lisek in the pole vault.
