Germany proved relentless in punishing Poland for mistakes, opening up a lead which the Poles were unable to claw back.

Struggling to hold back tears, Polish goalkeeper Piotr Wyszomirski told reporters after the game: "We wanted to fight until the very end. There maybe was a bit of a chance towards the end but we didn't make the most of our opportunities."

Poland had been hoping for their second-ever Olympic handball medal. In 1976 in Montreal, the Polish team finished third. On Sunday in Rio, they had to settle for fourth place.

France were later on Sunday to play Denmark in the final.

Poland has won 11 medals in Rio in total: two golds, three silvers and six bronzes.
