Polish double Olympic champion in cross-country skiing will race as the only Pole in Saturday’s World Cup in Lillehammer.
The athlete is to cover half of the distance of the 15-kilometer skiathlon event using the classical technique as well as the skating technique in the other half.
Kowalczyk, however, will give the tournament’s relay competition a miss on Sunday, in favour of the coinciding long-distance Ski Classics race, held as part of the La Sgambeda Cup in Lvigno, Italy.
There she will face an arduous climb followed by a six-kilometre loop that participants cover four times at an altitude of 1,800 metres above sea level.
Kowalczyk plans to participate in at least three more Ski Classics marathons this season, starting off with Marcialonga, in Trentino, Italy, on 31 January. The event will be followed by Birkebeinerrennet held in Lillehammer, Norway, on 19 March. Kowalczyk will end the season at Arefjallsoppet in Are, Sweden, on 2 April. (ua/aba/rk)
