“Our athletes showed that they can win even when they are not favourites,” Kopacz said.
“I want to thank you for that,” she added.
Poland came sixth overall in Beijing, with three golds, a silver and four bronzes.
It was the first time that Poland had managed three gold medals at the championships.
“Congratulations, that you always believed in victory,” Kopacz said.
“I hope that the [2016] Olympics bring us more medals, and I'd like to wish you that success.”
Poland's Beijing medals this August included golds from hammer-throwers Paweł Fajdek and Anita Włodarczyk (the latter just 23 cm short of her own world record), while the third gold was taken by Piotr Małachowski in the discus.
Adam Kszczot took silver in the 800 metres, while Piotr Lisek and Pawel Wojciechowski shared bronze in the pole vault, and Robert Urbanek took bronze in the discus. (nh)
