The fourth leg of the race saw the riders cover 220 km from Jaworzno to Nowy Sącz in the south of Poland.

“This is my first career victory at the Tour de Pologne and in a World Tour race,” Tinkoff-Saxo team member Bodnar enthused after reaching the finishing line.

“I set out with the number 1 for the 2014 winner, my team mate Rafał Majka, who is absent this year; it brought me luck and I think I have honoured this number in the best way possible.

“I had been gunning for this stage from the start of the Tour; I knew I could try an action from far back and I went for it.”

Meanwhile, Kamil Zieliński came in second, which was enough to make him top dog in the general classification.

“I’m ecstatic,” he said.

“It’s the most beautiful day in my career.

“I’ve always dreamed of wearing the yellow jersey for the Tour de Pologne and today this dream came true.”

All in all there are seven stages in the Tour de Pologne, with the race set to finish in Kraków on 8 August.

The race was first held in 1928, but was only held sporadically until 1952, when it became an annual fixture. (nh/rk)
