The games have brought challengers from 25 countries to the UNESCO-listed former fortress of the Teutonic Knights.

It's clear to see that the contestants are strongly motivated to try and show the dominance of their country from the very first clashes,” commented a spokeman for Malbork Museum.

So far, Poland remains unbeaten in the men's clashes, although it's hard to identify a clear favourite at the moment.”

Knights receive points for accurate blows delivered to opponents. Separate fights are being held with sword and shield, longsword and halberd (a two-handed pole weapon complete with axe-blade and spike). Both one-on-one combat and group clashes are included in the programme.

The championships continue until 3 May. (nh)
